Could this be the year I've been waiting for (and simultaneously terrified of)? Could this finally be the year that's Max vs. Charles??

Because that's what it looks like so far. This race was FULL of fantastic moments of Charles and Max racing each other for the lead and leaving all the other contenders in the dust. Max won, but it was the closest winning margin in a long time and Charles was that close second.

I loved how much respect there is between Max and Charles, especially from Charles who waved and gave a thumbs up to Max on the lap after the win and Max waved back. Charles also got on the radio after and congratulated Max and said how great that racing was. He also spoke about it after the race about the respect always being there. I LOVE IT.

This was also the weekend that Mick Schumacher had his (second) terrifying crash at Jeddah, but this time it was in qualifying. That's why the session was about 2.5 hours long. But thank God he's okay and was back at the track the next day. That was absolutely awful waiting to hear if he was alright and not having any information.

Here are my race notes:

Free Practice 1, 2 & 3

  • Kevin has some problems with the car

  • Lando runs over a sign that shatters all over the track and the have to red flag to clean it up

Qualifying

  • Latifi has a high speed crash and red flags the session but they clean it up quickly

  • The best part of this is that Hamilton just got out and didn’t make it to Q2 on PURE LACK OF PACE, no crashes or other excuses, just purely not good and George made it in and everyone is so shocked but I love it

  • Kevin and Daniel under investigation for a potential unsafe release

  • Daniel impedes Ocon and they think Daniel will get a penalty for it

  • MICK SCHUMACHER HAS A HUGE HIGH SPEED CRASH into turn 12 and they show it live but then didn’t show more of it because it was very high speed and they know they have to send an ambulance right away and he isn’t getting out of the car but is talking to the doctor but they still don’t show it and put him in the ambulance right away and everyone is VERY worried

  • As they are cleaning up little Schumacher’s Haas, they lift it with the crane and THE HAAS BREAKS IN HALF ON THE CRANE and I have never seen that before and Jenson says he’s never seen that before and that tells us how hard the car has hit

  • They finally resume Q2 with five minutes to go

  • Out in Q2: Norris, Ricciardo, Zhou, lil Schu, Stroll

  • The Ferraris put in great laps

  • PEREZ ON POLE FOR THE FIRST TIME!!!! He stole pole from the Ferraris at the last minute!!

  • Not sure why Max qualified in fourth but there was also an incident with him noted that no one explained. It seemed like it was related to him having no grip on those tires

  • Perez on pole, Charles in second, Sainz in third

  • They were so classy congratulating Checo and he was so adorable and happy, it was such a rollercoaster qualifying from that horrifying crash to the insane top 3 at the end to the Maxy thing and the thing where George Russell qualified 6th and Hamilton qualified 16th, I LOVE THAT

Race

  • Yuki won’t start because his engine cut out in the formation lap

  • Daniel got his penalty for impeding Ocon

  • Mick Schumacher won’t start of course because of such a big impact and if they crash again today they won’t be able to race again in Australia for lack of parts

  • They show the onboard of lil Schumacher’s crash for the first time

  • Hulk still in for Vettel in the Aston Martin

  • After race start Max got Carlos and he is into third and Perez maintains lead and Charles in second

  • Zhou has the same problem as Bot has starting in Bahrain and had like an anti stall thing and then got a little pushed around but is still going in 17th and is still ahead of Latifi

  • 4/50 HA GEORGE gets past Ocon for 5th and I LOVE IT

  • Ocon cut off Alo trying to do a move on him and it was very late

  • Max reports that the Ferrari harvesting lights aren’t working

  • Ocon and Alonso constantly

  • Zhou a five second penalty for gaining an advantage off track

  • They can’t stop showing Hamilton replays

  • Charles bluffs going in to have Perez pit and it worked

  • 16/50 Latifi crashes and safety car

  • Carlos and Perez pit and Carlos claims he was out ahead of Perez at the safety car line so they have the Gia investigate it before the restart so Perez gives the place back on restart

  • Zhou under investigation for not serving penalty because they forgot to stop their front jack man from touching the car so now Zhou has a drive through penalty, brutal

  • 37/50 Alonso has an overheating issue and he was having an amazing race but now Alonso is going to have to retire

  • 37/50 now DANIEL has no drive in the McLaren and car is skiing so yellow flag and not able to make it into the pits and he’s blocking the pit lane entrance and no safety car yet, only yellow flag, and there’s confusion and now it’s virtual safety car

  • Pit lane entry now closed

  • Somewhere in all this Bottas has to retire but makes it into the pits

  • Hamilton wants to pit but they tell him too late and now he’s the only one who hasn’t pitted hahahah and he totally gets

  • So basically three dropped at once on lap 37

  • Then there are TEN INSANE LAPS OF MAX AND CHARLES FIGHTING FOR THE LEAD

  • 49/50 Albon and Stroll collide and there is a yellow that blocks Charles from getting ahead

  • MAX AND CHARLES GO TO THE LINE ON THE LAST LAP

  • MAX WINS AND CHARLES IS SECOND WOWWWWW

  • Charles gets on the radio on the way into the pits to say well done to max, that was nice, and he’s so classy

  • Closet winning margin in a really long time between Max and Charles

  • Possible breach of double yellow for Perez and Carlos but it’s just usual confusion

  • Man on the podium max and Charles both look absolutely exhausted from all that amazing racing

  • They show a replay of Charles waving and giving a thumbs up to Max after the line and Max doing the same thing back RESPECTTTTT

This was not how I expected the season to start. Red Bull had shown dominance alongside Ferrari all of testing and in every practice session, but when it came to the actual race, both Red Bulls and one Alpha Tauri had total failures in the last few laps of the race. Then Charles Leclerc won the first race of the season!!

So three of the four Red Bull engines running had catastrophic failure and took them out of the race.

This was especially horrible because the Red Bulls were running in second (Max) and a couple places behind that (Sergio), so this hurt them terribly. I still don't really know what happened.

The rest of the race was fairly quiet except for some awesome lead-swapping going on between Charles and Max after the pit stops (they were both so professional and respectful) and, of course, the catastrophe for Red Bull at the end.

After the hydraulic issue presented itself, Max fought the car for most of the race, then was forced to bring it in to retire. Sergio's issue was unclear; he turned the car and the engine just died. And Pierre had a big fire break out, so apparently it was overheating or electrical. It all came out of nowhere.

But this was Charles' first win since Monza 2019, so I am so happy for him to have what he deserves: a Ferrari that can finally do justice to his talent.

As enormously happy as I am for Charles, it is so hard to celebrate when I know how demoralizing last weekend was for Red Bull. But if you think of just Charles, and the fact that it was a Ferrari 1-2, and the fact that Mercedes appears to be on the back foot, then there's good things here.

But overall, this is a very worrying start to the season.

Here are my notes from the weekend:

Free Practice 1

⁃ oh my gosh I am ALWAYS fascinated by the new season opening graphics and I am in LOVE with the fact that they saved Max for last because HES WORLD CHAMPION NOW LOOOVE

⁃ Ok so right off the bat, Seb got covid and Nico Hulkenberg is in his seat for the whole weekend

⁃ Ok I am not sure these redesigned tv graphics were necessary.

⁃ WOWW Maxy is racing with the number 1 now!! Because he’s champion!!!

⁃ Before even ten minutes are out, Ocon’s Alpine goes over a bump on the pit straight and the whole side pod cover blows up like shattered glass and exploded all over the track and they yellow flag it and then RED FLAG immediately so that bodes badly

⁃ It is going to be SO CONFUSING that the Alpine’s, who were blue last year, now have the BWT sponsor that Racing Point used to have and now they’re all pink cars

⁃ Now George Russell loses something off the back of the car

⁃ People are just shedding covers and pieces of car like it’s just blowing off

⁃ Porpoising porpoising porpoising. Porpoising everywhere

⁃ Charles has a little spin but still ends up ahead of Sainz on the time sheets

⁃ The Mercedes’ porpoising looks so bad

⁃ Interesting that they don’t have the names of the drivers inside the halos right now because that is really helpful to have usually

⁃ The Ferraris have a problem which I also saw in the testing but the black numbers in their car is basically invisible as it blends into the red paint and it’s awful

Free Practice 2

⁃ Charles puts a FANTASTIC time on the charts right out of the box and it’s fastest above everyone and seven tenths ahead of Sainz who is second

⁃ Maxy puts in a time for second that is half a second behind Charles, what does this mean

⁃ This thing where whenever a McLaren goes by, it’s like scraping on the ground and sounds totally different from anyone else

⁃ So it’s seriously like Max and Charles in first and second the whole session and everyone else just can’t get anywhere near them

⁃ Another fabulous thing is that George Russell did wayyyyy better than Hamilton this session. George was like 4th and Hamilton 8th and that was so satisfying

⁃ Ok McLaren has a problem because La do is slow and Daniel’s car started leaking from the power unit halfway through the session so he has not been able to get really any significant practice in during testing when he couldn’t race because covid and then this session which was stopped because of the leak that sounded bad for all Mercedes powered cars

⁃ If this is the year that Max and Charles are going to have to fight, I don’t think I can handle it

Free Practice 3

⁃ how is it ok for the drivers to "not quite be able to see where they’re going"? I mean

⁃ Daniel’s car is just now being fixed from yesterday so this is not going well for him so for

⁃ Charles has a SUPER SCARY slide that almost went into the wall but stops just in time

⁃ Just like always, they got our hopes up that Mercedes’ would be nowhere near the fast cars and then oh look at the last second of the meaningful practice session, they pull out a competitive lap, wow I’m so surprised NOT

⁃ Yuki has some kind of hydraulic leak issue and isn’t going to put a lap in this session

⁃ The Haas are looking very fast and no one saw it coming from last year at all, but super proud of Kevin and Lil Schu

⁃ Martin observes that George’s car is definitely porpoising worse than Hamilton’s which just further feeds the conspiracy

Qualifying

⁃ only now will we truly see what people’s true pace is

⁃ Yikes, Daniel is way behind in the McLaren and both cars on the team are struggling so badly. Also the Williams just seems off

⁃ The Haas do seem to actually be showing pace as do Ferrari

⁃ Of course the Red Bulls are looking awesome

⁃ The Mercedes are still slightly behind!! And george is ahead of Hamilton at the end of Q1! And Bottas is ahead of Hamilton in the ALFA ROMEO at the end of Q1!!

⁃ Out in Q1: Tsunoda, Hulkenberg, Ricciardo, Stroll, Latifi

⁃ Out in Q2: Ocon, Schumacher, Norris Albon, Zhou

⁃ Zhou would have made it Into Q3 but he was the first one to have a track limits lap deleted, so the stewards are not going to be consistent enforcing that one this year since a bunch of other people would have been out earlier by the same standard

⁃ Kevin has a hydraulic issue! Oh no, because he is like in the top ten strongly and we want him to keep going

⁃ CHARLES GETS POLE AND MAX IN SECOND AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH

Race

⁃ I am so terrified for this front row of Charles and Max. Is their day to fight finally here??

⁃ Bottas is starting so far up and I love it

⁃ Kevin is starting in 7th, I am so happy

⁃ New regulations say that if you’re in the top ten, you can start on any tire you want which is new

⁃ CHARLES STAYS IN FIRST WOOOO and MAX IN SECOND WOOOO and Kevin gets up into 5th but then falls back from a lockup but still impressive

⁃ Max is worried about the sound of his engine in the corners and they ask him to lift and coast to cool the brake

⁃ Bottas fell way behind and we don’t know why when he started in 6th

⁃ Ocon gets a five second time penalty for causing a collision

⁃ Alex Albon did a great start and is holding off 13th place while his teammate is in like last

⁃ The Mclarens have had terrible starts

⁃ Lol Ferrari already saying Plan A

⁃ Hamilton pits first from fifth

⁃ Hamilton comes out of the pit with no grip at all and is sliding around so that got ugly

⁃ After Charles pits from the lead, he comes out right in front of Max and they DO THREE LAPS OF MAX PASSING THEN CHARLES PASSING HIM BACK and on the last time, Max locks up so the next time he doesn’t have DRS, this is INSANE

⁃ 31/57 max pits for a second time

⁃ 44/57 max and Perez pits for a third time and surprises us and he is so much happier

⁃ Now ferrari is pitting Sainz only in reaction

⁃ MAX REPORTS PROBLEMS but then he’s okay and does a fast lap but still problems

⁃ 46/57 GASLYS CAR IS ON FIRE and overheated and so full safety car and it was a big fire but he’s okay and it’s out

⁃ Something that is wrong with Max’s car happened at the pit stop so he doesn’t pit again because it couldn’t be pitted again to fix it because it’s not a quick issue

⁃ Max is having a hydraulic steering issue it seems so can’t be fixed with ten laps to go

⁃ Safety car is going slow and Charles is upset but he slows down

⁃ Max is very unhappy but apparently this isn’t a reliability issue so just gonna try and finish it

⁃ Lapped cars may now overtake the safety car and Ted is talking about how he is still traumatized from Abu Dhabi last time with the hamilton championship thing hahahha

⁃ 50/57 safety car ending

⁃ 54/57 MAX HAS BATTERY PROBLEMS AND IS PANICKED ON THE RADIO

⁃ OH NO MAX HAS TO RETIRE WITH 2 LAPS LEFT NOOOOOOOOOOOO

⁃ OH NOOOOO NOW SERGIO HAS TO RETIRE BECAUSE HE LOST ENGINE POWER

⁃ THREE OF FOUR RED BULL CARS HAD POWER OR ELECTRICAL ISSUES AND DIDNT FINISH NOOOOO

⁃ CHARLES LECLERC WINSSSSS!!!! This is his third win!! Sainz in second so a Ferrari 1-2 for the first race of the season!! And then Hamilton in third ughh but George finished 4th so that’s great

Welcome, one and all, to the first annual FASTLY Awards (also known as "the Fastlies"). After much discussion, debate, joy, pain, and heartbreak, Fastly presents to you the awards for the 2021 Season.

Scroll down to see the category, the winner, and a little snippet of the logic.

Thank you and enjoy this year's Fastlies!

MOST INSANE RACE

NOMINEES

Saudi Arabia - (Utter chaos and confusion, Hamilton hits Max while Max is giving place back)

Abu Dhabi - (CHAMPIONSHIP DECIDER)

Russia - (rain at last minute ruins Lando’s almost first win)

Italy - (Max and Lewis collide dramatically mid-season and both have to retire)

Hungary - (Alonso heroically keeps Hamilton from winning, Seb disqualified from podium)

Azerbaijan - (one of many times Pirelli tires exploded without warning, including Max who was in the lead, then Hamilton screwed up by himself and Perez won)

WINNER

Saudi Arabia

Why? It was a tough choice between Saudi Arabia and Azerbaijan. The truth is that there were a bunch of totally INSANE races this year, but Saudi Arabia was the one that I would describe as being the most devoid of any feasible logic or order. Nobody had any clue what was going on and I lost count of the number of incidents almost right away. Part of me also wants to choose Abu Dhabi, since somehow, both Max and Hamilton went into that last race level on points. But in terms of the actual racing, it’s gotta be Saudi Arabia. Jeddah was just insane.

MOST INSANE YEAR FOR A DRIVER

NOMINEES

Valtteri Bottas

Yuki Tsunoda

Daniel Ricciardo

Max Verstappen

WINNER

Max Verstappen

Why? Bottas was constantly being threatened of losing his Mercedes seat, Daniel had a slow start to the season after switching to Mclaren and Yuki… well. Yuki was Yuki. But I cannot IMAGINE the ups and downs that Max had to experience this year while fighting that unbelievable championship battle. And there were a lot of dirty calls that worked against him.

MOST SAD TEAM

NOMINEES

Williams

Haas

WINNER

Haas

Why? They allowed Mazepin to basically buy their team and buy a seat in it, but the cars were awful to drive and so was Mazepin in every way. Poor little Schumacher had to be teammates with that awful guy. It was horrifying to witness.

MOST IMPROVED TEAM

NOMINEES

Red Bull

Ferrari

McLaren

Williams

Alpine (Renault)

WINNER

McLaren

Why? Ferrari was improved because they weren’t at the back of the grid all the time, but that’s a sad state of affairs. Red Bull was improved because they won the championship and had the best duo since Max and Daniel, which was Max and Sergio Perez, who is amazing. I love those two at Red Bull. It’s the best. Williams was wayyy better because George was getting them into Q2 and even got them into the front of the grid in a bizarre incident in Belgium. Anyway, they looked a far cry from the back of the grid staples they suffered through last year. McLaren had a weird start where Daniel didn’t do as well, but then he picked up a win in Italy and Lando almost got a win the week after in Russia, so they really were competitive again. Alpine was improved because Cyril was fired. But it’s gotta be McLaren because they were very strong most of the year. Williams is a close second.

BEST RACE ATMOSPHERE

NOMINEES

Mexico Grand Prix

Dutch Grand Prix

WINNER

Mexico AND the Netherlands

Why? These two were literally equally as awesome. Mexico was the ultimate Maxico and had the BEST post-race celebrations of Red Bull and Max and Sergio I’ve ever seen. It also included Sergio’s father congratulating both Red Bull boys, little Checo being there, and the crowd roaring for Red Bull and no one even noticed Hamilton and both Max and Perez were on the podium. AND THEN there was the Dutch Grand Prix, which was simply one of the most lovely things I’ve ever seen. 70,000 Dutch fans shaking the earth and turning everything orange and cheering Max on to victory and then him being sung the national anthem beautifully while robed in the Dutch flag as the royal family of the Netherlands watches on. I literally cannot pick a favorite. They were both perfect.

WORST MOMENT FOR FERRARI

NOMINEES

Monaco – Charles getting pole at his home race, but the team fails to get his car ready for the race

Mexico Free Practice 1 - there’s a guy in the Ferrari garage hitting something in Charles car with a sideways wrench and I just think it’s exactly what I expect from Ferrari

Italy Free Practice - Charles has to bring the Ferrari into the garage because there’s something wrong he can’t say on the radio since it might get the team in trouble

British Grand Prix – Charles leads the whole time but has to fight his Ferrari so much that Hamilton passes him for the lead with 2 laps to go

WINNER

Monaco

Why? I will never forget how unfair this was to Charles that Ferrari was not able to have him start from pole for his home race because they failed him. It’s more infuriating than I can even say.

LEAST RELIABLE TEAM

NOMINEES

Ferrari

Haas

Alfa Romeo

WINNER

Ferrari

Why? Still, no one can hold a candle to Ferrari’s inability to prepare and convert potiential into success.

MOST RELIABLE DRIVER

NOMINEES

Max Verstappen

Charles Leclerc

Sergio Perez

Lando Norris

Fernando Alonso

Pierre Gasly

George Russell

WINNER

Max Verstappen

Why? Max was consistently the champion this year and without heroic self-control and talent, things could have been very different.

I also want to shout out Sergio Perez, who was literally the other best human I have ever seen. He was so reliable and all his years of expertise came right into play to help Red Bull. It was beautiful.

LEAST RELIABLE DRIVER

NOMINEES

Yuki Tsunoda

Antonio Giovinazzi

Nicholas Latifi

Lance Stroll

Sebastian Vettel

Nikita Mazepin

Carlos Sainz

WINNER

Yuki Tsunoda

Why? Most people on this list were not providing the most consistent results this year, but no one was less helpful to his team than Yuki Tsunoda. He was super fast in the first two races, and then did nothing but bring Alpha Tauri down for the rest of the year and Gasly had to carry all the weight.

Mazepin is so awful that I don’t even want to talk about him.

MOST ANNOYING MEDIA CAMPAIGN

NOMINEES

- The “who is better at Ferrari, Sainz or Leclerc” story

- The “Hamilton’s 100th Race Win” story

- The “Esteban Ocon, Race Winner” story

- The “Sir Lewis” story

- The "Hamilton deserves an eighth world championship" story

WINNER

The "Sainz or Leclerc” Story

Why?

This was so infuriating that I had to choose this story over even all of the annoying Hamilton and Ocon stories. The fact that the commentators loved to invent drama lead to this completely ridiculous discussion that kept coming up of whether Charles or Sainz was the better driver for Ferrari. It’s like they didn’t even seen what Charles has provided them. Sainz was consistently behind Charles every time I looked at the times. It’s incredible to me that they could proliferate such lies and I do not understand why they would do this.

BIGGEST WTF MOMENT

NOMINEES

- Russia – the paddock is flooded before people arrive

- Belgium – rain is too heavy to race but they still have a farce race and everyone ends up with half points

- Azerbaijan – Pirelli tires exploding on multiple cars (again), including causing Max to crash who was leading

- Britain – Hamilton running around with the British flag and people cheering after sending Max to the hospital on track

- Monaco – the bizarre Serena Williams post-race interview

- Monaco – Ferrari fails to repair Charles car in time to start the race so he can’t start on pole at his home race

- Saudi Arabia – Max is hit by Hamilton while Max was giving the lead back to Hamilton

WINNER

Monaco - Serena Williams

Why? I just didn't feel more confused than the Serena Williams incident.
